A slow computer does not always need to be replaced. Before spending money on a new system, gather a few clues about when the slowdown happens and what has changed.
1. Restart and describe the symptoms
Save your work and restart the computer. Note whether the problem appears at startup, in one application, or during every task. A specific description is more useful than “it feels slow.”
2. Check available storage
A nearly full drive can make everyday work harder. Review storage usage and remove files you recognize and no longer need. Back up important files first, and leave unfamiliar system folders alone.
3. Review startup applications
Programs that launch automatically can compete for resources. Review your startup list and disable optional applications you understand. Avoid changing security or system services just to reduce the list.
4. Look for a pattern
Does the slowdown happen only online? Does one program freeze while others work normally? These details help separate an internet connection issue from a software or hardware problem.
5. Know when to get a diagnosis
Repeated crashes, overheating, unusual drive noises, or disappearing files deserve attention. If a drive may be failing, limit use and seek help before running repeated cleanup tools.
Repair, upgrade, or replace?
The right choice depends on the cause, the age of the system, and what you need it to do. A diagnosis can help compare the options without guessing.
